The Gambia Successfully Completed 2nd round of National Immunization Days (NIDs) 2014

Polio with 950 vaccination teams covering a target population of 416740 for children 0 – 5 months. Thanks to the efforts of the national authorities and the support of the polio coalition being spearheaded by the World Health Organization.

It will be recalled that the Minister for Health and Social Welfare Hon. Omar Sey spoke optimistically about the campaign during the launching of the 1st round (19th – 22nd September 2014), based on the country’s performance in attaining high coverage in similar campaigns.

The successes registered in the 2nd round could be attributable to the high political commitment and community participation demonstrated throughout the exercise coupled with the support of a proactive coalition of partners under the leadership of the World Health Organization as part of global efforts to ‘kick polio out of Africa and the world as a whole’.

The campaign was also covered by independent monitors. There were 10 independent monitors in the 7 regions. The independent monitors participated in both the in process and end process. The results of the independent monitors indicated that the coverage for house to house was 98% and out of house was 85% of children with fingers marked.

The overall coverage for house to house and  out of house was 92% cumulatively, however 69% of the parents were aware of the campaign. Overall it was a good campaign.
